“Executives from BizAway and Aervio after announcing the AI-focused acquisition in business travel.

In a strategic move underscoring the intensifying role of artificial intelligence in corporate travel, BizAway, the Italian travel management scale-up, has acquired Aervio, a Barcelona-based firm recognized for its AI-driven business travel solutions.

The acquisition, announced on April 14, 2025, is aimed at accelerating BizAway’s product innovation, deepening its footprint in Spain, and furthering its long-term platform strategy.

The deal is expected to integrate Aervio’s NLP-based automation tools into BizAway’s proprietary system, significantly improving the speed and intelligence of travel booking, invoicing, and support processes. Most notably, Aervio’s platform is designed to reduce booking and admin time by up to 90%.

Strategic Fit: AI + Market Expansion

Aervio, ranked 11th among Spanish TMCs by Business Travel News, is not a volume acquisition. It is a capability acquisition — targeting talent, technology, and Spain’s local market penetration.

With 8 Aervio employees joining BizAway’s Spanish offices, the integration aims to bring Aervio’s AI-first mindset into BizAway’s broader platform roadmap.

Founded in 2015, BizAway has built a lean, tech-driven travel management model. The company serves over 1,600 businesses across 27 countries, from NGOs like Doctors Without Borders to large brands like Satispay, Venchi, and Lega Serie A.

Having processed over 500,000 bookings and saved clients more than €10 million, BizAway is now focusing its next growth phase on deep tech integration and regional strength.

“This acquisition marks an important step in our growth and innovation strategy,” said Luca Carlucci, CEO and co-founder of BizAway.

“Technology must go hand in hand with the human factor. We’re focused on combining smart automation with empathetic support.”

Financing the Future: From Capital to Capability

This acquisition follows BizAway’s €35 million Series C round in September 2024, led by Mayfair Equity Partners, bringing total funding raised to over €50 million.

Other investors include MundiVentures, Azimut Digitech Fund, FNDX, GELLIFY, EXOR Seeds, and illimity — all signaling strong backing for its technology-first roadmap.

The transaction cost remains undisclosed, but the timing and integration strategy suggest a deliberate scale-up via acquisition, investing capital into complementary innovation rather than pure expansion.

Competitive Landscape: A Calculated Play Amid Rising AI Stakes

The deal positions BizAway more competitively against players like TravelPerk, Navan, and Onfly, who have recently made moves to deepen automation and streamline corporate travel logistics.

  • Onfly, in particular, recently raised $40M to expand in Latin America.
  • TravelPerk has continued its global acquisition streak, integrating smaller tech companies to diversify its platform features.
  • Meanwhile, traditional TMCs continue to fall behind on AI capabilities and increasingly rely on third-party tech vendors to stay competitive.

This is no longer a fight over price or inventory — it’s about platform intelligence, automation depth, and operational scalability.

Integration Outlook: Human + Machine = Scalable Service

Aervio’s platform strength lies in its Natural Language Processing (NLP) engine, built to understand and act on user travel requests — reducing reliance on manual inputs or agent-based workflows.

The inclusion of Aervio’s core team in BizAway’s Spanish operations ensures continuity of innovation and reduces the common friction associated with post-acquisition tech migrations.

“I believe in BizAway’s vision of delivering the future of travel,” said Santiago Montero de Quadras, CEO of Aervio. “I’m proud that Aervio’s technology, team, and expertise can contribute to that journey.”

Conclusion: AI is No Longer Optional

BizAway’s acquisition of Aervio is a clear sign that AI is no longer a peripheral feature in business travel—it’s the backbone of the next phase.

The companies that can embed automation into core workflows while maintaining service empathy will define this space over the next decade.

With capital, vision, and now Aervio’s tech DNA, BizAway is emerging as one of the most strategically aligned challengers in Europe’s fast-evolving travel tech market.
